Selwyn Aquatic Centre
Facilities include a 'learn to swim' pool and hydrotherapy pool
The eagerly anticipated aquatic facility represented an exciting challenge for the Engenium team of structural engineers.
The Engenium team’s involvement in the Selwyn Aquatic Centre project was a continuation of a relationship with the Selwyn District Council which began with the design and construction of the Selwyn District Council Headquarters. The Company is proud to have been involved in another project that represents a significant addition to the Rolleston community.
The team's experience in the design of structural steel and concrete structures was a key element in delivering an efficient structural system for the aquatic centre facility whilst maintaining the architectural impact of the building.
The main pool hall area required a large clearspan roof structure to accommodate the four indoor pools. Full height glazing was required to the north elevation to take full advantage of the buildings north facing aspect. Our teams worked in close collaboration with the project architect and other consultants to develop a pool hall design to meet these client requirements.
Structural steel was used for the main pool hall roof structure due to its large clearspan capabilities and efficiency. High strength stainless steel cross-bracing was specified in the walls to minimise the visual impact on the large glazed elevations.
Our in house draughting team used 3D CAD modelling software to coordinate the locations of penetrations for mechanical and pool water systems with the services engineers for the project. Penetrations were included in the construction drawings which helped to minimise the amount of coordination required by the contractor.
In addition to the structural design, Engenium was engaged to complete the civil engineering design for the exterior storm water and foul water management systems. Soakage chambers and swales were designed to treat and disperse the large volumes of water run-off generated by the building and surrounding paved areas.
