AMI Stadium

Our team of experienced structural and civil engineers were involved in the AMI Stadium 'Full Circle Project.'

This project encompassed the design and construction of the 17,000 seat Paul Kelly Motor Company Stand and the 14,500 seat Deans Stand. The completed project provided Christchurch with a premier sporting and entertainment venue.

Deans Stand

Completed in December 2009, the Deans Stand was officially opened on 21 January 2010. The Client engaged Engenium staff members to carry out structural, civil and geotechnical design, and associated monitoring for the 'Full Circle Project' at AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

The Deans Stand is constructed of precast concrete for the main structure and steel for the roof. The stand is a three tier grandstand with seating for 14,500 people and an 1800 guest members lounge on Level 3. A special feature of this project is the 31m cantilever roof which was designed to support relocated lighting headframes.

Our team received a 2010 ACENZ Silver Award of Excellence for this project.

Paul Kelly Motor Company Stand

Completed in 2002, the $42m, four tier West Stand has seating for 17,000 and incorporates 33 corporate suites and 2500 corporate seats, linked by a large lounge, as well as player training and changing facilities. Engenium team members were responsible for the structural design of the main concrete superstructure and foundations under a joint venture arrangement with another engineering firm.

  • Pre-cast concrete was used predominantly in the design, providing a significant cost and time saving over conventional frame construction. It included elements weighing up to 55 tonnes.
  • Detailing of large elements provided reduced joints and increased the speed of construction.
  • Design and detailing provided for a progressive vertical construction face which allowed the use of large capacity mobile cranes. Seismic joints in the 220-metre-long structure were avoided by incorporating predetermined construction methodology at the design stage.

Our team received the following awards for this project:

  • Premier Achievement Award, Tilt-Up Concrete Association of North America, 2003
  • Gold Award of Excellence, ACENZ, 2004
